Bourgas - the District Museum of History

The city of Bourgas is the second largest city at the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. It lies 390 km east of Sofia, in the farthest western part of Bourgas Bay. Bourgas is a successor of a small Roman small named Deultum. During the Middle Ages a small fortress called Pirgos was erected.

The present day city of Bourgas offers wonderful landmarks and sights that tourists could enjoy. The District Museum of History houses an archaeological hall with a wide collection from the old colonies on the Black Sea coast. The museum was founded in 1925 and it also offers a number of ceramic vessels, coins and ancient jewellery, plates of Thracian horse-riders, tools, and miniature models of old settlements.

The Ethnographic Museum offers a nice collection of traditional koukeri masks, as well as typical of the region costumes and ritual accessories. The museum has video-hall where one can watch at ethnographic and historical films. The museum is arranged in an old house, which was declared a cultural monument.

The Museum of Nature and Science contains plenty of exhibits related to the geological characteristics of the earth and the Bourgas region. More than 1200 exhibits of insects and reptiles and more than 140 species of fishes have been exposed, too.

The Cathedral of St. St. Cyril and Methodius lies close to the marketplace. It is and interesting sight because of its beautiful wooden altar amazing frescos.

The Opera House, the Philharmonic hall and the Drama Theatre are housed in three different buildings and function all through the season. Along with the Puppet Theatre they outline the cultural atmosphere of the city with their nice performances and concerts.

The Bourgas' Art Gallery hosts halls that exhibit works of Bulgarian artists, icons by Revival icon-painters and foreign arts. It was established in 1945.

The Sea Garden is situated on a high shore, where visitors can enjoy nice flowerbeds, sculptures and trees. Within the park one can find a small zoo and the open-air theatre, which houses the International Folklore Festival that takes place each year.

The central beach of Bourgas is located below the Sea Garden. Its sand is in dark colour, due to the mixture of various alloys of magnetite. The city also has a northern beach.

On almost equal distance (about 25 km.) from Bourgas are situated two of the most impressive ancient settlements on the Bulgarian coast - Nessebar to the north and Sozopol to the south. The town of Nessebar is also included in the list of UNESCO world heritage sites. On walking distance from Nessebar is situated the largest Bulgarian Sea resort - Sunny Beach.

Roussalka resort - the small pearl of the northern coast

Roussalka Resort

The Bulgarian northern seaside resort of Roussalka has been established in 1968 in the popular Taukliman bay (The Birds' Bay). The area hosts a typical bird colony in a wonderful rocky area near the Black Sea. The Roussalka resort lies just 14 km east of the town of Kavarna, 59 km north-east of Bulgarian sea capital - Varna. The nearest settlement is the small village called St. Nikola, which is situated just one kilometer away from the resort. In the beginning Roussalka predominantly received French tourists while today a lot of Dutch, Russian, Belgian and Bulgarian holiday-makers visit the resort.

Roussalka offers accommodation in 522 separate small villas facing the sea. The complex is also equipped with enough recreation and sports equipment. According to the architectural decision, the resort is built on terraced terrain. The tourists have opportunities to enjoy practicing almost all kinds of water sports. In addition, the complex has biking alleys, gym, tennis-courts and SPA centres for water treatments and massage. There are restaurants, discotheques, snack-bars, and a bar with entertainment programme. Roussalka also offers small firth with curative mud, an open-air theatre, and yachting facilities, including a small yacht port.

There are also interesting places to visit around Roussalka resort. The most notable is the Kaliakra cape, which lies just several kilometers away. The village of Kamen Briag (Stone Shore) is also in the vicinity of Roussalka - there one can see interesting rock formations, and wonderful rocky bays with many caves and reefs. The impressing Yailata protected area is situated 1 km south of the Kamen Briag village. The are is a favourite place for students, hippies, trackers and tourists in search of privacy. Right next to Roussalka one can enjoy the amazing views of the Taukliman bay.

Several small bays close to Roussalka offer different beach conditions - sand, bigger stones, pebbles, and rocks. The divers can enjoy good opportunities for practising as the underwater world is amazing due to the peculiar rocks relief.

Kavarna Rock Fest 2011

Arch Enemy will perform on the
2011 Kavarna Rock Fest

The Bulgarian seaside town of Kavarna hosts annual rock festival. It happens during the summer season so that tourists that spend their vacation in Kavarna or in the resorts nearby can also enjoy two or three evenings listening to their favorite rock and metal bands. The main orginizer of the venue is Kavarna municipality and the town's mayor - mr. Tzonko Tzonev.

The Kavarna Rock Festival 2011 is scheduled for three days - July 15th to 17th inclusive. Although the bands that will perform were announced a bit later (started coming up at the end of April), it worth to wait. The first confirmed crews were the Swedish melodic death metal band Arch Enemy and the Finnish power metal band Sonata Arctica. As supporting bands will act the less popular Dream Shade and Suicidal Angels.

On May 09 also confirmed the bands of Paradise Lost from England and Tiamat from Sweden. The promoters expect more acts to be announced soon.

For accommodation during the venue, the visitors can select from a list of hotels in Kavarna. There is also a camping site, where fans can sleep on tents and caravans, too. The nearby resorts also offer large choice of hotels and other accommodation opportunities.

Nesebar and its ancient secrets

Old town of Nesebar

The Black Sea resort town of Nessebar extends over a small peninsula, about 37km northeast of Bulgaria's southern sea capital - city of Bourgas. Nesebar's beach is believed to be one of the finest beaches along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast due to a large sandy strip of land between Nesebar and the village of Ravda to the north, covered with clean golden sand. Right next to Nesebar lies the largest and most famous Bulgarian seaside resort - Sunny Beach.

In addition to Nesebar's superb location and the oportunities for wonderful summer vacation that it offers, the town is more famous with its great history. The present-day Nesebar is the successor of a Thracian fishermen's settlement named Menabryia, which dates back to the 2nd century BC. Later Greeks named it Messembria (which was later transformed into Nesabar by the Slavonic people.

At present, Nesebar is one of the most popular Bulgarian sea resorts among foreign tourists for its ancient spirit and well-preserved remains. According to some legends, Nessebar had about 41 churches, the most impressive being the Old Bishop's Residence, which is located in the centre of the town.

In addition to the well-preserved churches, in Nesebar one can also see the remains of fortress walls, Roman and Greek street pavements, fortifications of different epochs, authentic medieval, administrative and other buildings.

If you get some free time during your Nesebar vacation, it worths to visit the neighbouring resort of Sunny Beach. In this top class summer resort one can enjoy wonderful sports facitilities and have an amazing night life.

Kara Dere - one of the last remaining natural beaches

The fine sand of Kara Dere beach

The Kara Dere beach is situated 7 km north from Byala, a seaside resort town in the far southern part of the Varna district. The beach can be reached through an unpaved road. Kara Dere is one of the last remaining clean and unpopulated natural beaches on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. The beach is about 5 km long. During the summer season, the Kara Dere beach and the surrounding bushy forest become camping site for holidaymakers who want to escape any civilization - there is even no cell phone coverage in the area. The lack of the comfort offered by the big resorts and hotels is compensated by the wonderful nature of Kara Dere area – the fine sand on the beach, the clean waters and the opportunity to spot dolphins in the bay.

The Kara Dere beach is also suitable for nudists, since people there are very tolerant. The visitors usually accommodate on tents, but there is also space for caravans in the northern end of the beach. Fresh water and food can be bought in the nearby town of Byala, where one can find plenty of small stores. Local producers also offer fresh fruits and vegetables.

Just two days after I posted an article on the options for a quiet summer vacation in a village close to the Black Sea coastline, I feel it is time to give suggestions to those who prefer to spend their holiday in a more luxurious environment in some of Bulgaria's high-class seaside resorts. Being guests of resort pearls such as Golden Sands, Sunny Beach and Albena, tourists that avail of a larger holiday budget can get almost everything they have ever needed - accommodation in amazing five-star hotels with all the facilities and services that go along with them, top-class restaurants with a variety of international dishes, beautiful and clean beaches with crystal waters and lots of attractions like beach bars, massage cabins, diving schools, jets and many other sports and entertainment facilities.

Varna and surrounding resorts
I will start the luxury resorts preview with Varna and its surroundings because of the existence there of several luxury resorts that are close to one another and at the same time give easier access to the beautiful city of Varna. Varna is widely known as the sea capital of Bulgaria, a Black Sea beach town that is a tourist destination unto itself with an active cultural scene, a couple of notable museums, a dolphinarium and a charming seaside garden. The Archaeology Museum in Varna is one of the best in Bulgaria, and my visit to the creepily-cool Medical History museum was one of my favourite travel experiences. Walking in the Sea Garden is a pleasant way to spend a sunny afternoon.

All luxury resorts in Varna's proximity are situated north of the city. The first stop is the area around the Evksinograd government residence. The residence is built in a New Baroque style with a beautiful garden, fountains, and a staircase going down to the beech, though access to it is restricted to particular hours and days of the week. The first notable resort - St. St. Konstantin and Elena - lies two kilometers from there in northern direction and 9km. from the Varna city center. It offers accommodation in more than 50 hotels. The five-star Grand Hotel Varna equipped with swimming pools, an excellent restaurant, bars, fitness halls, lobby-bars and many other facilities, stands out as a top high-class accommodation in Konstantin and Elena.

In walking distance from the St. St. Konstantin and Elena resort and just 10km to the north of Varna, tourists can take advantage of the luxurious tourist base of the Sunny Day (Slanchev Den in Bulgarian) holiday complex. The resort combines a vast beech in a small quiet bay, a natural park, and two mineral springs - in addition to modern recreation, sports and entertainment facilities. The Sunny Day resort offers accommodation in 4 hotels of different category. The most luxurious one is the five-star hotel Palace.

Further north one gets to the Chaika complex, which lies next to Kabakum - one of the most fabulous Bulgarian beaches. Right after Chaika and just 17km to the north of Varna one can reach the top-class Riviera Holiday Club, which borders with the rival holiday complex of Golden Sands. Riviera's hotels offer a lot of luxury and comfort, while the resort's beach is private and full of recreation and sports facilities. The charm of the Riviera Holiday Club is further enhanced by the fact that the complex is located inside a natural park of centuries-old trees and mineral water springs, which make it a modern SPA centre as well.

Golden Sands resort
Golden Sands (Zlatni Piasatsi in Bulgarian) is one of the best summer resorts in Bulgaria. The beach of the resort stretches over some 4km with width of up to 100 metres, and is full of modern facilities for sports, recreation and entertainment. Almost the entire coast along Golden Sands falls within the boundaries of the Zlatni Pyasatsi natural park, which adds to the charm of the resort. The Golden Sands resort offers accommodation in more than 100 hotels, including several five-star ones like Marina Grand Beach, Melia Grand Hotel Hermitage, hotel Admiral and others.

Albena resort
The resort of Albena lies 32 km north of Varna city and just 12km south-west of the town of Balchik. The resort has a magnificent four-kilometer long beach lined by luxury boutiques and restaurants. There’s also a nice balance of nationalities in Albena - German, Dutch, Russian, Scandinavian and British - and the resort is mercifully free of the kind of tackiness increasingly found in Portuguese and Spanish holiday resorts. Prices may be a bit steeper than other resorts in Bulgaria but if one hunts around he can find reasonable all inclusive deals whereby guests can eat and drink to their stomach contents while luxuriating by the swimming pool. The Albena resort has about 40 hotels open to tourists, the most notable of which is the five-star Grand Hotel Flamingo.

Sunny Beach resort and town of Nessebar
For those who prefer a luxury vacation on the southern Black Sea coast, the top options are the biggest Bulgarian coastal resort - Sunny Beach, and the ancient town of Nessebar. Sunny Beach (Slanchev Bryag in Bulgarian) resort is situated 42 km north of the city of Bourgas and occupies the entire territory stretching from the village of Vlas to the north and the town of Nessebar to the south. It offers accommodation in more than 120 hotels, including several five-star ones like Victoria Palace, Helena Park, Helena Sands and the Barcelo Royal Beach Hotel. Right next to Sunny Beach one can enjoy the amazing town of Nessebar, which is a successor of a Thracian fishermen settlement named Menabryia and still contains remains from ancient times. The town hosts one 5-star hotel - Sol Nessebar Palace.

Summer vacation in quiet villages

The village of Velika

Today weather in Bulgaria is really charming and has nothing to do with the winter season we are in - looks like the end of April instead of early February. There are about four months before the start of the holiday season, but we already think where to spend our summer vacation. Well, the main destination is known - somewhere on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. But how to make our choice? Maybe in one of the high-class seaside resorts such as Sunny Beach, Golden Sands or Albena? Or perhaps in a quieter resort like Sinemorets or Kranevo? Or even in a coastal town like Tsarevo or Kavarna? There is obviously a big number of options to consider. But the final goal is clear - everybody wants to enjoy fully his short two-week summer getaway.

A friend of mine has told me that last summer he spent two weeks in the village of Kosti in the Strandzha mountain, about 15 kilometers away from the town of Tsarevo and the Nestinarka beach. Kosti is a typical rural site, far from tourist crowds. Sounds nice, but 15 km. for the nearest beach is really far for me.

So I've started looking for other villages that are more developed as tourist destinations but are closer to the coastline. The first option is the village of Velika, situated about 4 km. away from the Lozenets resort and about 10 km. away from the town of Tsarevo. There is a good choice of holiday homes with well-kept yards that can be rented in the village, while prices are reasonable. Velika is located in the skirts of the Strandzha mountain, so it perfectly combines sea tourism with the beauty of this natural reserve.

Going to the north of the city of Bourgas, an attractive holiday destination comes right next to the Sunny Beach resort. The Kosharitsa village lies just 3 km. away from it, rising on a hill that offers a fabulous view over the sea and the resort. In Kosharitsa, one can find a rich choice of newly built luxury villas with pools.

For those who prefer an even quieter place for their summer vacation, a good option is the Durankulak village, which is the far northern destination on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Durankulak is situated just 5 km. away from the border with Romania and offers cheap accommodation in guest houses. Guests of the village can enjoy sunbathing on two beautiful beaches located very close to Durankulak - the smaller one being to the north of the Cosmos camping site that almost reaches the border, and the bigger one called Karvuna, which stretches next to the Durankulak moor and almost reaches the Krapets village to the south.

The beach of Ezerets

Bulgaria's northern seaside beaches are relatively less known to the ordinary toursits. BulgarianSeaResorts.com website has published an article about these beaches. It contains useful information for every beach situated north of Shabla town.

One of the beaches covered is situated near the village of Ezerets, which is a small non-tourist village 5-6km to the north of Shabla and almost the same distance to south of Krapets. Ezerets does not lie on the coast but is some 2-3km. away from it. Despite that, it has one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen - quiet and clean waters, nice sands and hardly any living soul.

The article covers there other beaches in the vicinity of Shabla - those of Shablenska Tuzla (very close to the Shabla town, also known as Shabla beach) Krapets (7 km. to the north of Ezerets) and Durankulak (further 15 km. to the north of Krapets). They are also not so popular among the holiday makers in Bulgaria, but once visiting any of them, tourists definitely want to return back.

Shabla - a quiet coastal resort town on the north

Shabla is a town on the Bulgaria Black Sea coast, situated about 24 km south of the Romanian boundary, 66 km north of Varna, and 536 km north-west of Bulgaria's capital Sofia. When visiting the Shabla town, one can enjoy an old community cultural centre, museum collection and an art gallery in the town. Every 24th May Shabla hosts big folklore festivale of people's art and creativity noted for the songs, dances and applied art exhibitions. The Shabla's beach lies some 3 km away from the town and it is clean and pleasant for recreation.

Once reaching Shabla, the tourists can also visit some interesting sights nearby. The archaeological excavations at Cape Shabla, which lies about 5 km east of the town, are the most interesting site for the visitors. The remains of an ancient Roman fortress can be seen and despite being a small one it had been an important centre of commercial contacts with the other Roman settlements along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.

The Shabla Lake is loacted 3 km southeast of the town and it is a wonderful place for fishing and recreation. The lake is a nestling site for more than 100 000 wild geese. One can visit the Ezerets Dam which is situated nearby the town in north direction. Next is the fishermen’s settlement of Krapets (16 km north-east of Shabla) lies a camping site, which is no longer operative, but its beach is very nice and clear. The Dourankoulak Moor is further northwards and is famous for being a reserve for a number of marsh birds, some of them are registered in the Red Book of the fauna species in Bulgaria. Remains of the biggest Eneolithic settlement in Europe have been excavatedo in the big island in the middle of Dourankoulak Moor. There is a camping site next to the lake, too. There is a yachting club nearby the town of Shabla, where the annual yacht-regatta along the Black Sea coast starts.

The Sea Capital of Bulgaria - Varna

The city of Varna in Bulgaria has a long and dramatic history. Varna has a superb location and good visibility. There was an ancient tribe of fishermen on a small cape, where currently is situated the terminal of the naval station. Varna was liberated by the Ottoman rule in 1878 and the city became the largest port in Bulgaria and it's Black Sea capital. At the end of the 19th century Varna was connected to the Bulgaria's capital Sofia by railway track. Many factories have been built during that time and the industrial fishing has grown. Varna is becoming quickly a naval station undergoing any European influence in architecture and naval transport and at the same time, a preferred place for vacation of the Bulgarian intellectual elite. Currently the city is the center of the northern Black Sea coast and a landmark of the construction of resorts around it. Varna is an industrial center and recently it became the second largest city in Bulgaria after the capital Sofia, outrunning the city of Plovdiv.

Village of Shkorpilovtsi - a small sea resort with impressive nature

The village of Shkorpilovtsi is a small Black sea resort and one of the last quiet places on the Bulgarian coast. It lies some 40km to the south of Varna and about 30 kilometers to the north of Byala. Shkorpilovtsi is named after two Czech brothers, Shkorpil, who have been acknowledged for their contribution to the development of Bulgarian archeology in the late 19th c.

The village officially has about 720 citizens. One of the most impressive beaches on the Bulgarian coast is situated some 100 meters away from Shkorpilovtsi.

During the high season, most visitors to Sozopol rarely leave the town as it offers a variety of entertainment opportunities. The town appeals with its music clubs (latino, jazz, etc.), discotheques, plenty of restaurants with all the imaginable variety of cuisines, two nice beaches with various water sports facilities and several more in its immediate vicinity. One can hardly get bored in Sozopol, as most of the hotels in the new part of the town offer their own entertainment and animation options for kids and grown-ups. In the evening, if the sea allows it, one can take a boat trip around Sozopol and enjoy the view of the town’s lights and its nearby islands. But if one visits the town out of season, then most of these entertainment options are not on the menu. Then it is only up to one’s imagination to fill a day with enjoyable activities. One such option is a boat trip to the nearby island of St. John. St. John is the biggest island in Bulgaria’s territorial waters of the Black Sea. It lies about 1km away from the old town’s port of Sozopol and is relatively flat, with its highest point rising to just 33 m. above sea level. At night, St. John is easily noticeable and heard for its sonar lighthouse that shows the way to the Bourgas gulf. The island of St. John is a worthy destination for a visit on a rainy day or out of season. It is a true escape back to the wild nature, where hares and seagulls are the true rulers.

The Ahtopol's Beach

Bulgaria's furthest part of the southern coast offers a variety of beautiful beaches that border the national reserve of Strandzha. Some of these like Nestinarka near Tsarevo, Ahtopol’s beach, the main beach of Sinemorets – Butamyata, and Silistar (between Sinemorets and the border town of Rezovo) are quite popular among tourists as they offer all modern beach facilities in terms of sunbeds and umbrellas, snack bars and even restaurants, sports facilities and other recreation services. Given the entire menu of services on offer, many are ready to put up with their only disadvantage – these beaches are often overcrowded during the top summer season. Yet, if someone still prefers more deserted beaches that are closer to the nature and offer peace and complete rest, he/she cannot get disappointed either. Ahtopol’s nudist beach that borders the main beach of the town to the north, or the less known Lipite beach near Sinemorets are exactly for them. One clearly cannot buy any refreshment or a snack there, but can sunbathe, swim or practice favourite sports (if bringing all the needed equipment) undisturbed. Of course, these beaches lack lifesavers, so one is completely responsible for his/her own personal safety while swimming.
